Installing Wine to run Windows games in Ubuntu

Ubuntu is amazing, stable operating system that has many benefits over Windows.

  • It is absolutely secure, there are no viruses or malware for Linux
  • It is more stable than Windows
  • It starts up much faster than Windows
  • It is 100% free
  • it doesn’t track your usage
  • it is private
  • and many more…

Unfortunately, many amazing games are not available for Linux or Ubuntu. Windows is the leading gaming platform for PC. You can solve this problem by installing a program called Wine to Ubuntu. Wine allows you to run Windows applications on Ubuntu. Wine supports Direct3D and OpenGL and you can run many new games with it. You need a Internet connection to install Wine.

Installing Wine

Here are the instructions:

  • Open up Terminal  (press Windows Key – write Terminal – Press Enter)
  • If your system is 64 bit, enable 32 bit architecture (if you haven’t already):

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

  • Add the repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wine/wine-builds

  • Update packages:

sudo apt-get update

  • Then install (example for the development branch):

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel

Now you have installed Wine. If you are going to run new games for example GTA V, then it better to install Wine Staging

It is installed similarly to the development branch build:

Run these commands in terminal one after another:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wine/wine-builds
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends wine-staging
